Worldwide Corporate Controller

Algolia is seeking a world-class corporate controller with prior experience in subscription and usage software revenue business models.  We are seeking a high-impact individual who has excellent business instincts, sound business judgment and the ability to lead an organization successfully.  A broad range of finance experience is preferred. 
The right candidate will have an independent, confident demeanor and be able to work in a fast paced, high growth and lean environment.  Good presence, self-confidence, and an eagerness to contribute broadly is required.  This person will be hands on, passionate and offers a proven background that demonstrates effectiveness working with all levels of an organization.  Success in the role will be measured by the ability to positively influence and interact at all levels of the organization as well as by successfully mentoring and developing the team.  The right person will be a key member of the CFO’s staff and will interface with the Algolia leadership team, the Audit Committee, and the Board of Directors.  Sense of urgency is key to the role with a background that has proven experience to work across diverse lines of a global organization and be an outstanding team player.  He / She must be comfortable introducing and managing change and have an ability to drive process improvements.  It is essential that the successful candidate has strong communication and leadership skills.
As a key member of the Finance Leadership team, this person will manage and build a team of professionals to meet business objectives, drive business decisions, develop and implement financial and operational performance metrics and oversee the worldwide accounting close process.


  • Direct areas of responsibility include oversight, internal reporting, general ledger, as well as general accounting functions. You will work closely with the company's outside auditors as well as the internal operational teams to develop and execute business controls. Utilize your system's skills to drive improvements in existing and new reporting systems to better provide the company's management team with operational and accounting information necessary to proactively manage a growing business. The company controller will act as a key business partner with significant interface with the executive staff and the leaders of the functional areas across the company.
  • Provide overall financial leadership and direction to the San Francisco, California and Paris, France sites including preparation of journals and accounts, analysis, forecasting, budget development and management, cash and working capital management, audits, US GAAP and statutory financial reporting, financial and internal control, tax and regulatory filings
  • Recruit, supervise and mentor direct reports and their subordinates covering the areas of general accounting, credit & collections, accounts payable, cash management, service accounting, revenue recognition, cost accounting, commercial support, planning & forecasting, and any other accounting/finance related activities deemed appropriate 
  • Champion highest quality corporate governance.  Lead preparation and presentations to the Audit Committee. 
  • Lead the company relationship with our independent accountants, KPMG and manage the annual audit and quarterly review process.  Chair the company’s Disclosure committee. 
  • Ensure Sarbanes Oxley 404 compliance and an adequate system of internal controls throughout the company. 
  • Deploy effective metrics and dashboards across the controllership organization that foster constant improvement and progress towards best practices. 
  • Direct the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial accounting close and international consolidation process 
  • Develop, maintain and ensure technical accounting policy, procedures and internal controls in accordance with US GAAP 
  • Manage, mentor and develop a high performing professional accounting team 
  • Prepare the company for an IPO, streamline processes, and drive best practices


  • CPA and Big 4 experience required
  • BA/BS in Accounting, MBA preferred
  • U.S. Certified Public Accountant with 10-15 years post qualification experience demonstrating detailed knowledge of accountancy
  • Professional accounting experience in a global high technology subscription software company, with time spent in various operational areas 
  • A broad and global mindset.  An ability to work effectively in an environment that is culturally diverse and geographically dispersed 
  • Strong ERP systems experience, preferably in a NetSuite environment 
  • Advanced knowledge of US GAAP and SEC standards, subscription and usage revenue recognition 
  • Excellent knowledge in assessing, developing and implementing internal controls 
  • A person able to solve problems and issues creatively – knows how to break a problem down and drive towards solutions 
  • Attention to detail, organized and desire for continuous improvement 
  • Unquestionable integrity and discretion 
  • Confident, self-starter with ability to work with minimal direction 
  • Strong people management skills with capability to lead and develop a talented global team.  A proven track record of identifying and developing talent
  • Highly computer literate and experienced with integrated financial systems preferably NetSuite and Zuora
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in US GAAP, ASC 606 Revenue Recognition, Subscription and Usage Revenue
  • Global experience with French statutory financial management experience, preferred
  • International consolidation: experience with multi-currency/location/segment consolidations and preparation of Financial Statements in a high-tech environment 
  • Demonstrated history of supporting fund raising and Corporate acquisitions due diligence and strategies
  • Ability to lead and develop staff for optimum performance, including management of remote (foreign entity) staff 
  • Experience at our current stage and beyond ($50-200M ARR range, high growth, lots of change and building internal infrastructure)
