Measuring Performance Metrics

Introduction

What are the average value in my analytics that I should aim for, for each metric CTR, CVR, No click rate etc?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we at Algolia get asked by new customers, it’s also one of the hardest to answer.

No two businesses are the same, they have different customers, different products, different seasonal cycles, pricing, user interfaces, marketing campaigns etc. So even within a specific market like men’s fashion or computer parts it’s very difficult to compare.

So what should you do?

The best approach to take with your click and conversion metrics is to make comparisons to your own data, over time and between different searches and pages.

Look at trends over time, are your overall metrics moving up or down? It’s worth comparing to similar periods, for example the week after a sale will almost always look very different to the week of the sale. Year on year trends can be very informative.

When you’re evaluating performance for different category pages look at the outliers, pages that are over or underperforming compared to the average are where to spend your time.
Pages that are doing really well can be a good source of ideas on how to improve overall. Pages doing less well may be early warnings or problems with your strategy.
